A range of methods exists to prevent slippage during the processing of such elastic yarns as spandex using optimized friction and tension control systems. The elastomer polyurethane serves as the base for most of these yarns, and its extensibility is up 100 times greater than that of other fibers. During yarn manufacture, the level of draft applied to the fibers controls such critical yarn properties as the modulus of elasticity. Downstream processability depends on the optimization of these properties. A review of processes, such as yarn unwinding and feeding, that depend on control systems to prevent slippage discusses static and dynamic friction, high elasticity yarns, sticky slippage and how to sovle this problem, computer simulations, and changes in yarn tension.
