Two dimensional laser Doppler anemometers (2D-LAD) and a high speed video analyzed the drafting process on a Schlumberger GC 14 chain gilling machine. The 2D-LAD determined the speed relationships in the drafting zone during polyester fiber and wool fiber drafting. The delivery rate, ratch, type of pins, pinning density, roll weighting, draft amount, and doubling weight influenced the drafting process. Draft interference occurred in the main drafting zone between the pin emergence and drafting rolls. Velocity relationships differed at the different measuring sites across the width of the sliver. Increasing delivery rates created more floating fibers in the drafting zone and decreased sliver evenness. Lubricants and additives negatively influenced sliver evenness. High speed video analysis confirmed the results of the 2D-LAD analysis. 2 refs.
