The disadvantages of Indian cotton fibers, such as their greater weakness and higher levels of contamination, impede the ability of Indian yarns to meet export quality standards. Spinning mills should select cotton in the fields, supervise ginning, and use ultraviolet light testing prior to blowroom processing to reduce cotton contamination. Modern cotton mixing and processing technologies are necessary to manufacture yarn with world class quality. Well maintained machines result in higher yarn quality. Such modern testing equipment as the Advanced Fiber Information System should guide maintenance schedules.
