Spinning mills in India will face challenges, threats, and opportunities when markets fully open in 2005. The spinning industry must upgrade obsolete machines and increase the activity of unused spindles. Profitability dropped to 2 percent of national sales in the early 1990s, discouraging modernization and leading to poor quality yarns. Projected yarn production for 2002 will require fewer than 30 million high quality spindles, suggesting that Indian mills should discard or modernize many spindles. Threats to the industry include intermill differences in productivity and increases in the cost of cotton fiber relative to cotton yarn selling prices. Cotton yarn should dominate the local market in 2002, and exports should continue to increase to 25 percent of the global market. 6refs.
