Researchers will develop and experimentally validate nonlinear models for high speed yarn transport systems. The study will focus on computer models for specific textile processes that involve rotating balloons, including cylindrical yarn package unwinding, conical yarn package unwinding, ring twisting and winding processes in ring spinning and ply twisting, and two-for-one twisting. The yarn unwinding models will include yarn elastic deformation, tension and balloon shape variations due to wind angle change, and yarn sliding at the edge of a yarn package. An unwinding testing machine includes a balloon rotation sensor, storbes, and video camera for verification and improvement of computer models of unwinding. 7 refs.
