Although DREF 3 friction spun yarns are stronger than open end friction spun yarns, they are not as strong as ring spun and rotor spun yarns. To enhance the strength of DREF 3 yarns, researchers attempted to improve the reinforcing effect of the sheath by introducing additional long, strong, and flexible fibers. For all cotton, polyester, and viscose DREF 3 and open end friction spun yarn samples, tenacity decreased as yarn count became finer. Viscose sheath-core yarns had the greatest reduction in tenacity. Replacing J-34 cotton in the sheath with fine count Digvijay cotton increased DREF 3 yarn tenacity, whereas replacement with longer Digvijay cotton had no effect. Adding small amounts (6 percent) of fine, strong polyester fibers to the sheath also increased DREF 3 yarn tenacity.
