A project has been carried out at the Textile Research Institute, Greiz, Germany, to develop a test rig for doubling and drafting long-staple-fibre slivers without damaging the fibres. The aim was to reduce fibre crimp and produce finer slivers. Slivers were produced which could be spun directly on conventional test ring spinning systems. Such a modular short spinning system operates independently of the worsted yarn spinning plant, and can rapidly supply information an spinnability, final colour (on the basis of the twisted yarns) and raw materials. It is especially suitable for top dyeing, since small amounts of twisted yarn can be produced for colorimetric analysis.
