A feed device for advancing fibre material includes a feed roll; a support element immovably held during operation and extending spaced from and generally parallel to the feed roll; and a feed tray assembly composed of a plurality of side-by-side positioned feed tray segments 7a to 7n. Each feed tray segment is of a resilient material and has a first portion (end portion) immovably affixed to the support element and a movable, second portion having a surface oriented toward the feed roll and co-operating therewith for advancing the fibre material passing through a nip defined between the feed roll and each feed tray segment is displaceable toward and away from the feed roll.
