In order to recognize, indicate and, optionally, to automatically prevent malfunctions from occurring in compacting devices used in the production of compacted yarns on spinning machines, the hairiness of the yarn thus produced is monitored by means of sensors and when a predefined limiting value of the control device is exceeded with respect to said hairiness, a shutdown signal and/or a warning signal is given. Since the number of especially long protruding fibres varies significantly between compacted and non-compacted yarns, the number of protruding fibres belonging to a higher class of length is chosen as a criterium for a malfunction of the compacting device.
