The recent animation in the flax fibre market is mainly due to the possibility of processing flax in mixture with other fibres. Therefore, alongside of conventional flax spinning techniques, other spinning techniques are more and more widely adapted to spin flax fibres. A new technology is emerging, in which an essential role is played by cotton or wool spinning machinery. The reasons for this trend are: to have flax fibre processed on machines that are more productive than conventional flax-processing machines; to improve working conditions; to solve the problem of utilisation of low grade flax fibres (flax tow); and, last but not least, to improve the quality of linen textiles by mixing flax fibre with other fibres. However, to process flax fibre by a system other than the flax spinning system, additional operations have to be included in the process to adapt the fibre to the machinery. A number of methods have been developed in Poland and elsewhere for mechanical modification of flax fibre. A process for manufacturing short flax fibre, based on Befama and Falubaz machines, has been developed at the Technical University of Lodz. The quality parameters of short flax fibre are superior to those of short flax fibres produced by foreign manufactures. The fibres have been processed with initial proportion of 50%flax/50% cotton yarns of linear densities 25 tex, 30 tex, and 40 tex.
