Application of a spin finish on wool prior to blending with polyester improves yarn quality and spinning performance and reduces yarn waste. Spin finishing processes, including watering, tinting, and oiling, affect fiber fly generation, number of ends down, winding efficiency, contamination levels, count variations, hairiness, and coiling of sliver in cans. Optimal oils should prevent fiber to machine abrasion, decrease static charge, have high thermal stability, be resistant to bacterial growth, not be adhesive, and be miscible in water. Tables present data on oils suitable for application on woolen and wool/polyester blend yarns.
