ISO 14000 provides a benchmark for industry to improve its environmental performance on a continuous basis. The standard requires legal compliance and identification of significant environmental impacts in order to obtain certification. A documented environmental policy determines the structure of an environmental program. Auditors certify compliance to the standards. Smaller companies, however, cannot afford the high costs of an environmental program. As an alternative, a generic solution integrates quality, safety, and environmental management, decreaseing costs considerably. This example illustrates it application in cotton spinning mills. The integrated management system involves optimization of all parameters for yarn quality, optimization of machinery settings for average yarn count and productivity, online documentation of recycling and waste management, and calculation of energy consumption for each product.
