Fabric manufacturers in the Far East use Solospun yarns to manufacture light weight fabrics with improved hand. W.D.I., a division of the Woolmark Company, is the Kingdom. When installed on a conventional spinning machine, the spindle modifies the yarn structure to produce a weavable singles yarn with improved abrasion resistance. The resultant yarn can be woven as warp without sizing. Installing Solospun spindles involves attaching their plastic rolls in pairs to the drafting arms of the spinning machines. The rolls split the rovings and prevent twist at the nip. The separated fibers recombine to increase yarn stability. W.D.I. expects to install 150,000 spindles by 2003 worldwide.
