Experiments used fallers mounted on an Instron tensile testing machine to simulate the drafting behavior of lubricated and nonlubricated wool sliver during drawing and evaluated the effects of various lubricants. Researchers measured the load generated during drafting and analyzed the shape of load displacement curves. Sliver weight and drawing speed affected the slope of the drafting curve and peak drafting force more than did the type of lubricant. Changes in testing speed resulted in minor inconsistencies. Data revealed no correlation between viscosity and the peak drawing force. Optimal drafting conditions required lubricants with low friction, low concentration, low viscosity, and high surface tension. 22 refs.
