Roving defects cannot be eliminated or repaired during spinning. They reduce yarn grade, increase ends down and waste, and limit machine productivity. Quality rovings have a uniform linear density and excellent appearance and must be rubbed or twisted on the roving machine. Causes of roving stretch include low twist, variations in bobbin diameter, improper selection of winding or lifter wheel, incorrect positioning of the belt on the cone drum, and incorrect initial positioning of the cone drum. roving stretch results in high numbers of thin and thick places, improper drafting that produces hanks, and excessive hardness or softness in the bobbins. Flyer roving machines with speeds of up to 100 meters per minute and automatic or semiautomatic doffing optimize roving for worsted yarn spinning.
