Particle image velocimetry permits the visualization of air flow at cutting knife edges and in the wedge shaped region where the cylinder and doffer are close together in cotton opening and cleaning machines. The method uses a laser to create a thin curtain of light and a modified video camera to observe particles within the curtain. Image processing programs permit cross correlation for the calculation of flow vectors. In the resultant vector image, the length of the vector indicates the speed of the particles. During carding, fine titanium dioxide particles act as seeding particles.
