The benchmarking process requires a company to analyze its own internal processes, identify leaders in a particular department, and adopt measures superior to those in place. BTRA has conducted several studies of textile mills to identify best practices in India and abroad. Optimizing yarn manufacture involves analyzing each cost element, including raw materials, wages and salaries, power, spare parts, packing material, and administrative expenses. Steps for optimizing employee performance include the standardization of job categories, employee training, task simplification, optimization of workload, better handling systems, and a more humanitarian approach to labor problems. To overcome basic problems due to raw materials, quality conscious textile mills have standardized their raw material by fixing tolerance limits for process parameters and adopted work practices that improve yarn quality and machine utilization. 4 refs.
