A study examined the effects of blowroom, carding, combing, and drawing machines on such cotton fiber properties as length and nep content. Blowroom processing reduced the means length and length coefficient of variation and increased short fiber and nep content. Rich, moderate, and poor mixing reduced mean fiber length by 11.6 percent, 6.7 percent, and 4 percent, respectively, and increased nep content by 209 percent, 130 percent, and 147 percent, respectively. Carding improved mean length, length uniformity, and short fiber content by 7-12 percent, 4-5 percent, and 4-8 percent, respectively. Combing increased means fiber length by 17-23 percent and reduced short fiber content by 13-18 percent. Carding and combing machines had nep removal efficiencies of 85 percent and 57-77 percent, respectively. 8 refs.
