Automated transport systems between the machines in ring spinning mills reduce space requirements, minimize yarn damage, increase machine efficiency, reduce labor costs, and shorten running times. A study of the effects of such systems on total yarn production costs considered investment costs, labor costs, energy consumption, and material costs for spinning mills producing 20 tons of Ne 30/1 carded cotton yarns per day and 20 tons of Ne 30/1 combed cotton yarns per day. Labor costs and yarn defects decreased when using automatic transfer systems, but energy costs increased and machine stoppages at any stage affected the entire production line. Researchers concluded that transport automation was practical only for larger production volumes. 8 refs.
