Short Wool Fibre Manufacturing and Spinning in Blends with Flax.

An enzymatic treatment for increasing the yield of short wool fibers from sheep skin pretreated the skin with the antiseptic Katapol and painted the skin with a compound based on Bacillus licheniformis enzymes. Wool fibers obtained by this method had wide variations in diameter but were suitable for spinning in blends with short flax fibers. Researchers spun 30/30/40 conventionally obtained wool/enzymatically obtained short wool/acrylic blend fibers into yarns on an open end woolen system spinning machine after processing on a Shirley Laboratory carding machine. Resultant yarns had strength, coefficient of variation of strength, and coefficient of variation of linear density properties superior to those of 100 percent acrylic yarn. 10 refs.
