An innovative tension control twist draft spinning system uses the withdrawal tension in the yarn being spun to control the yarn count. The system spins low quality yarn from a large mass of fibers in a pot that is otherwise difficult to spin and manufactures functional yarns from such specialized materials as carbonized cotton/polyester blends in small lots. Analysis of the process revealed the relationship between yarn properties and fiber properties and provided tools for designing yarns with specific properties. 8 refs.
