Experiments were carried out to compare the use of a portable humidity meter and a drying cabinet to determine the humidity of wool at different stages in the spinning process - flock, sliver, roving and yarn. Much higher values of humidity were produced by the portable humidity meter. The results were influenced directly by interfibril parallelism, the positioning of the electrode in the sample and the lubricants used in washing and spinning. A mass of 2.5 grams was considered optimum for flock with the portable meter, for slivers and roving 3.5 grams was optimum. The zone of the bobbin of yarn chosen for measurement and the depth of penetration of the electrode had a direct effect on the results. Penetration of 20 millimetres is recommended.
