Ongoing research on a novel, combined carding and spinning machine for staple yarn manufacture focuses on analyzing and regulating fiber transport to the spinning heads to achieve reliable operation and product uniformity, as well as improving carded web uniformity and fiber mobility in the machine transverse direction. The novel system consists of a carding machine fitted with a web dividing device and multiple spinning nozzles. Researchers quantified transverse mobility by studying web weight distribution during batt feeding with a known transverse weight variation and tracer fiber dispersions. 19 refs.
