A study developed computer models of high speed systems that transport nonuniform yarns, such as winding and unwinding systems for staple fiber yarns. Researchers focused on yarns with significant nonuniformity and yarn structures resulting from ring, open end, and vortex spinning methods. The models facilitate the use of computer aided design technology to optimize the quality and productivity of high speed yarn transport systems. Experiments that determined yarns to package friction at different radial positions and different winding tensions indicated that crosshead speed affected the friction coefficient and that package winding tension did not affect the friction coefficient when unwinding speed increased. Other experiments will study the effects of yarn hairiness, imperfections, and structure on the friction coefficient. 7 refs.
