A study applied air to the fibrous web in the drafting zone prior to delivery to the front roll nip of a ring spinning machine to reduce yarn hairiness. Researchers introduced the air flow through two rows of angular perforations in the bottom apron in the front zone. The air flow reduced hairiness by 18 percent in 60s carded cotton yarns and 30 percent in 36s carded cotton yarns. Abrasion resistance increased 26 percent for 60s yarns and 42 percent for 30s yarns. The air current reduced the altitude of the spinning triangle by approximately 20 percent and the base length by approximately 15 percent. Microscopic tracer fiber analysis confirmed these results. 8 refs.
