Processes to which cotton fibers are subjected prior to yarn formation include bale selection, conditioning, opening, blending, cleaning, carding, drawing, combing, roving, and spinning. Spinning mills process 6-100 bales at a time depending on their opening and blending machines. Blowrooms allow each bale to expand and acclimatize. Opening removes groups of fibers from the laydown for mixing and blending. Cleaning machines remove trash, dust, and other impurities. Optimizing the carding process minimizes the number of thin and thick places. Drawing straightens and orients the fibers. Combing removes short fibers, which amount to approximately 10-20 percent of the total fibers, depending on the average fiber length. Common spinning processes include ring spinning, rotor spinning, friction spinning, and air jet spinning.
