A study to improve the quality of yarns spun from fine denier fibers evaluated the effects of pin drafting on the irregularities of sliver manufactured from fine denier fibers. An experimental pin drafting machine drafted slivers from four levels of fiber fineness by changing the draft ratio. Deviations between indexes of irregularities corresponding to output and input slivers established drafting performance. Finer fiber deniers reduced deviations of the gill sliver due to the larger number of fibers contacting the pins of the gill fallers and the greater interfiber cohesive force. 10 refs.
