The particular characteristics of elastanes, such as their rubber-like handle, low tear strength and poor fray resistance, means that they are usually used in combination with other yarns for many applications. Various manufacturing processes are available for producing the combination yarns, including covered and air-jet-entangled yarns (which are compared in the article) and elastic corespun yarns and Hamel Elasto-Twist yarns which are produced by a core twisting process (which are also compared). The production, properties, applications, advantages and disadvantages of the various yarns are discussed.
