Core yarn demand has been growing for some years with the major share covered by the soft (elastic) yarn types. Polyurethane based elastane filament yarns have mainly been used as core. Substitution by cheaper and technologically interesting textured yarns based on PA, PET et is inhibited by the large bobbin sizes on which they are available. Rewinding to smaller package sizes is necessary but is also expensive and labor intensive. A similar situation pertains for hard (non-elastic) core yarns. Comoli Fermo Srl, Italy, has addressed this problem and designed a new and fully automatic machine to rewind elastic and hard yarns at minimal cost. 24 yarns can be wound simultaneously and full bobbins are exchanged automatically without manual operation. Further operational details are supplied. The component parts of the machine and speed of operation are described. Four advantages of the smaller bobbins and other innovative aspects of the machine are summarised.
