Core-spun yarns belong to the family of so-called multi-component yarns. Combining spun yarns and filaments with different yarn characteristics can provide new functional features. When spinning core-spun yarns, a filament core is covered with staple fibers. A distinction is made between soft-elastic core-spun yarns and hard, non-elastic core-spun yarns. Non-elastic core-spun yarns are described and are used mainly in industrial applications. The evolution of elastanes is covered from Bayer’s introduction in the early 1950s. Comfort and function are then discussed in garment production, particularly underwear, and how these can be achieved. Spheres of application for core-spun yarns are detailed and beneficial factors noted. Greater used in industrial applications is evident-furniture covering fabrics, vehicle seat covers and interior trims are examples. The manufacturing process is discussed with special additional equipment for manufacturing core-spun yarns which can be attached to the G33 ring spinning machine by Rieter.
