Controlling tension is critical in tow cutting, with the radial blade tow cutter almost universally used to cut manmade fiber into staple. The working method is explained. The problems of tension being too high or too low are discussed, and lead to the difficulty of cutting layers of tow, which frequently breaks blades and causes cut-length problems. The use of ladder bars can also present difficulties and is the least preferred method of applying tension to tow. The function of two-roll stands is explained and though there are limitations, for less critical products and low-tension processes, they can offer an economical solution. Consistent performance only comes from a tension stand that measures and regulates the final tension of the tow band. Design features are included. Tension stands with a disc brake system regulating tension provide simple and consistent control. The SM&E 300 Series Regulating Tension Stand is pictured and its working method described. DM &E’s contact details are supplied.
