A review of the history of spinning technology describes the design and use of the most basic spinning instrument, the spindle, since the Neolithic Period; the design and use of the spinning wheel since its introduction in India in the eighth century; the transition of the spinning wheel to spinning machines; Arkwright's Waterframe spinning machine introduced in 1769 for use in factory systems that were precursors to the industrial revolution; further developments by Paul, Higgs, Hargreaves, and Crompton in England during the 18th century; and the spinning industry in Catatonia in the 18th and 19th centuries.
