Nathaniel Kolmes and Harold Plemmons recently patented a nonmetallic yarn for use in protective clothing. The United States based inventors claim that the yarn is flexible, pliable, and soft, and provides superior resistance to abrasive cuts. The yarn costs less than comparable reinforcing yarns that contain wire, and can be woven or knit on conventional machines. The yarn comprises a glass fiber core and bias wrapped covering elements, which may consist of glass, cotton, wool, or polyethylene filaments. For most applications, the glass core diameter ranges from 375 to 1,000 denier. The yarn bears United States patent number 5,177,948.
