Heal's Sigmascope uses optoelectronics to measure to a high level of accuracy the number of yarns per unit length in woven fabrics, knit fabrics, wire mesh, grids, graticules, and other textiles. The instrument consists of a line scan camera capable of resolving yarn pitch frrom within a fraction of one yarn per centimenter to up to 100 yarns per centimeter. Capabilities extend even to the measurement of yarn pitch in dense, black fabrics, which have limited light reflectivity. For striped fabrics and fro fabrics with a nonuniform surface, the Sigmascope has the Target mode of operation. The instrument is menu driven and easy to operate. It is designed for stand alone use, but can interface with IBM compatible PCs for the storage and analyisis of multiple test data.
