Scientists in the Czech Repulbic produced basalt sewing threads. The basalt threads had sufficient strength, a high softening temperature, good chemical resistance, and a high resistance to hydrochloric, nitric, and sulfuric acids. The abrasion resistance of the basalt threads, however, was low. The abrasion resistance could be improved by the use of polymer coatings.
