The raw materials utilized for sutures include both natural and manmade fibers. The selection of raw material depends on the preferences of the surgeon, desiring knotting characteristics, concerns about potential infection, supply and price variability, and the type of medical procedure. Multifilaments for sutures must meet United States Federal Drug Administration standards. These standards place special requirements on the extrustion procedures. After extrusion and twisting on a narrow gage ring twister, manufacturers braid the filaments into a single strand, stretch the suture, and attach a needle. Packaging and sterilization are the final manufacturing steps. Manufacturers test suture filaments for compliance with special raw material specifications for tenacity and evenness.
