The effect of linear density and twist factor on the hairiness of yarn spun from 0.6-1.1dtex polyester microfibres and 1.0dtex nylon microfibres is studied using the shirley Yarn Hairiness Tester. Both ring-spun and rotor open-end-spun yarns are investigated. The hairiness of both types of yarns decreases with the linear density of the microfibres. The ringspun yarns are hairier than the rotor open-end-spun yarns. In the case of the ring-spun yarns, hairiness decreases with twist factor, which is not confirmed for the rotor open-end-spun yarns.
