An understanding of the nature and influence of the rheological properties of a sewing thread on its dynamic loads during stitch formation is important for optimizing the sewing process and for seam strength planning. Scientists investigating the rheological properties of threads during sewing evaluated the breaking tension, breaking elongation, and viscoelastic properties of threads spun from polyester fibers. Data indicated that thread deformation as a consequence of technological conditioned forces during stitch formation was not a linear function of the acting load, but depended upon the duration and intensity of loading. Threads having similar rheological properties exhibited similar behavior at dynamic loading. 9 refs.
