Parts One and Two of this series of articles discussed image processing for the evaluation of blend irregularity in both model and real blended yarns. The system involved converting original images into trivalued images, which enabled quantitative analyis of blend irregularity on the surface of a short length of yarn. The system, however, required threshold values for converting the images and significant processing time and experience. The researchers developed a new system that measures line sense (a series of intensity values) around the center line along a yarn axis, which provides real time evaluation of the blend state, or fiber arrangement. This system eliminates image converting, which reduces processing time. The researchers used model yarns, for which the number of component fibers, blend ratios, and blend states were known, to study the feasibility of the system. 4 refs.
