The design of flat spinneret plates for melt extrusion must accommodate operating temperatures that range from 200 to 400 degrees centigrade and mechanical pressure loads that range from 30 to 400 bars. Most spinneret plates are made from corrosion resistant stainless steel. Analysis shows that spinnerets should not have more than ten rows of bore holes per plate for optimum performance. The capillary diameter for most bore holes ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 millimeter. During extrusion, the molten polymer filaments are ventilated with air jets in a direction perpendicular to the horizontal axis of the spinneret plate. To facilitate cooling, manmade fiber manufacturers recommend that the distance betwen bore holes shuld average 7.5 millimeters.
