To promote the manufacture of high quality sewing thread in India, NITRA has compiled and organized information to act as a guide for companies. Selection of the optimal sewing thread is critical to garment processability and end use quality. NITRA reviewed a range of sewing threads, particularly blends of polyester/cotton and polyester/viscose, for properties related to sewing and wear performance. Polyester/cotton sewing threads were optimal for cotton fabrics and cotton fabrics containing a low percentage of manmade yarn. The blended sewing threads performed better than cotton or polyester sewing threads, particularly at high sewing speeds, because of their superior evenness, low level of imperfections, high flex abrasion resistance, and superior heat dissipation. Ironing tests conducted with a range of sewing threads demonstrated that seam fusion and melting were possible when 100 percent polyester sewing threads were used. 8 refs.
