The Institute of Natural Fibers in Pozan, Poland, is investigating the use of hemp fibers for the production of flax/hemp yarns. Researchers blended hackled hemp fiber with flax fiber from a bleached roving. A 30 percent hemp fiber content yielded an 84 tex yarn. Reducing the hemp content to 15 percent yielded a 75 tex yarn with improved tensile properties and eveness. The researchers also determined the influence of polyester content on the flax/hemp blends. Extended trials on a pilot scale resulted in specific spinning recommendations. For the production of 84 tex yarn, the researchers recommend a bleached roving that contains 20 percent hemp and 10 percent polyester. 3 refs.
