Phillip Slack and Extrusion Systems Limited exhibited Autocrimp at ITMA 1995. Autocrimp gives extruded polypropylene and automatic three dimensional helical crimp like that of wool. Autocrimp builds differential shrinkages into the fiber at the time of extrusion, resulting in a permanent crimp that can only be removed by actually destroying the fiber. Manufacturers hope that Autocrimp will make it unnecessary for flat two to be processed on bulking equipment to provide crimp. In terms of carpet fiber, Autocrimp could transform the polypropylene business by lowering production costs and offering a shorter process time. autocrimp applications include making bulk continuous filament or high loft staple fibers, which may be blended with wool. Potential end uses include quilts, pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, and carpets. Developers anticipate incorporating a flame resistant additive to bring polypropylene fillings in line with safety legislation. 2 refs.
