Hoechst recently introduced a Trevira high tenacity polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber that is especially suitable for air bag fabrics. The Trevira PET fiber will be available in two types. Trevira Type 726 will be sold in Europe. Both types of Trevira feature a lower specific heat, lower moisture absorption, lower water retaining capacity, and a higher wet tensile strength than nylon 66. The lower moisture sorption and water retaining capacities of Trevira fibers reduce their tendency to degrade over time. Extensive tests of Trevira air bags verified their performance in complete air bag systems.
