A research project at the University of Gent will develop a method to test the resilience of pile yarns. The technique will test these yarns after spinning and will constitute an important preliminary quality control procedure for carpet production. The first stage of the project will evaluate various methods of measuring viscoelastic properties and conduct comparative tests. Statistical analysis of the test data will establish relationships between yarn properties and carpet resilience, carpet construction parameters, and yarn resilience. The various test methods will be compared and a prototype instrument will be constructed based on the most appropriate method. Abstract.
