Hoechst's high tenacity Trevira polyester yarn is ideal for the manufacture of air bags. In this market, Trevira competes with nylon yarns. Hoechst has optimized Trevira's properties for this end use, minimized its price, and established recycling operations for both production waste and the product after use. Air bags manufactured from Trevira are either coated or uncoated. The production of uncoated Trevira air bags costs significantly less than that of coated air bags. Use of uncoated air bags in the loom state is possible. In production, air permeability is the most critical parameter and depends on the square meter weight and the fabric setting. Other important properties are fabric thickness, tensile strength, and tear propagation resistance.
