By a wet opening process consisting of a pretreatment followed by a bleaching operation, cheap flax scutch can be processed so that, in a similar way as mechanically opened flax short fibres (>1 dtex), it can be used as fine flax fibres (<1 dtex) for blended yarns in cotton spinning. Different pretreatment and bleaching methods for this are described. On a small technical scale and in a bulk trial, the combination NaOH/H₂O₂ serves as an example to confirm the positive results achieved in laboratory tests. After a subsequent mechanical treatment, flax fibres obtained in this manner and blended with 70% cotton are successfully processed into ring-spun yarns of 25 and 36 dtex.
