A presentation at Clemson University's October 1984 Tire Technology Conference addresses how Owens-Corning redefined the role of glass fiber tire cord in the early 1980s to focus on improved and more cost effective radial belts and monoply radial carcasses. Vitrex-HMI is Owens-Corning's new high modulus inorganic tire cord product specifically designed for tire and rubber applications. The production process incorporates changes in glass filament diameter, strand form, sizing, fiber impregnation, and twisting. Advantages over conventional glass fiber reinforcements include a 20 percent increase in filament diameter, a more uniform distribution of coating weights through the length of a tire cord package, and greater flex fatigue resistance. Both laboratory and road tests indicate that Vitrex carcass reinforcement is superior in strength to commercial polyester and nylon products.
