Expert systems structure, store, combine, evaluate, and display sets of rules that represent detailed knowledge of the system evaluated. Use of these systems occurs when the answer to a problem is not straight forward and logical from the beginning and when various and often contradicting information can lead to more than one correct solution. The development of expert systems for use with spinning equipment requires that a number of complex problems be addressed. Expert systems for chemical fiber spinning machines must present the system structure and elements in a clear and unambiguous manner to the user. The system must allow rapid correlation between the cause and the appearance of a failure to minimize production losses. Finally, failure diagnosis by the expert system must occur while the spinning machine is running.
