Researchers at the Technical University of Lodz (Poland) derived differential equations of motion that described tension impulse transmission from a yarn through a tricitional barrier with a circular cross section. The differential equations, which were related to the Newtonian equations of motion, assumed that the behavior of the yarn obeyed Hook's Law and that Coulomb's Law described the frictional forces. Experiments tested the estimations, which were obtained by numerical analysis by measuring the changes in the tension of yarns that were wrapped around a cylindrical friction barrier. Data suggested that the part of the tension impulse coming into contact with the barrier was reflected, but the remainder of the impulse was transmitted through the frictional barrier. 8 refs.
